Letting go of the dummy
Okay i’m going to admit it, both of my children had dummies. They aren’t the devil’s work and some kids do better with them, however in sleep terms a dummy is a big no go area. Giving up the dummy can really help get a better nights sleep.
Why? Because they are seen as a sleep ‘prop’. A sleep prop is something that interrupts a child getting themselves to sleep properly. So they may well go to sleep well on a dummy, but when they naturally wake through the night due to their natural and completely normal sleep cycles if they don’t have the dummy there they may find it hard to go back to sleep and thats when the crying can start.
So as sleep consultants we advocate getting rid of the dummy! But don’t be scared, often it is the case the the parents are more attached to the dummy than the child.
When we took it away from Lyla she forgot about it immediately. With Sam we sent them off to the dummy fairies and they didn’t get asked for again. So my advice is just do it! Decide when to go for it and make it happen. You won’t regret it!
